Thurso, Caithness
£25,407 - £29,891 DOE Plus Benefits
If you pride yourself on your management capabilities, strength of character and personality as well as your impressive boat-handling skills, there is a unique opportunity at Thurso Lifeboat Station for you.
The RNLI is the charity that has been saving lives at sea for over 190 years. We are now looking for a Coxswain to join our team.
The majority of your time will be divided between ensuring the lifeboat and equipment work to the highest order and training the crew. Inspiring their progress, youll take them on seagoing exercises, identify ways they can improve and impart your valuable knowledge - so that when an emergency shout does occur, you, your crew and your lifeboat will be absolutely prepared.
As there is always a high degree of interest from the public, youll have the opportunity to meet them and talk about your work.
Ashore you will lead the operational management of the station and provide regular assurance on compliance and activities to the Lifeboat Management Group and area management teams
As we work towards our aims of reducing preventable loss of life, you will take the lead on proactive education and safety programmes, working collaboratively with internal RNLI partners and wider external organisations.
To be considered, you will need:
- To be an RYA Yacht Master with CoBT operational pass out
- An NVQ Level 4 qualification or equivalent maritime experience
- Thorough maritime knowledge and the ability to command, lead a crew and safely operate/handle vessels up to 20 metres in length
- Knowledge of RNLI/SAR and lifeboat operations
- Excellent communication and operational leadership skills
As this is a seagoing appointment, the Coxswain will be required to meet the RNLIs medical and eyesight requirements.
You will also need to live within close proximity to our lifeboat station, as you will be required to be on call 24 hours per day, including weekends, with agreed permitted weekend and annual leave being planned in advance with your deputies.
Ideally, you will be passed out as an RNLI Mechanic, or hold a qualification for the operation of small, medium speed diesel propulsion vessels.
The closing date for applications is the 21st November 2017, with interviews scheduled to be held on the 29th November 2017.
Our staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. We respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within our teams, and consider it essential to help us deliver a world-class lifesaving service. We are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, we also look for applicants who share our commitment to living our RNLI values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping us work towards our goals of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using our expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
