The Role:
The individual will be responsible for supporting, developing and implementing all aspects of my clients Design & Engineering Guidelines / Standards. The role will require the individual to support projects through-out the EMEA region.
The Mechanical Design Manager will be required to provide both tactical and innovative thinking around the design and engineering of my clients data centre developments and support the team in meeting challenging deliverables against aggressive project expectations. The candidate will have responsibility for preparing the design and planning of the projects to assure that consistent application of standards (project, scope and quality) achieves the established budget (heavy emphasis on quality, availability and value-engineering) and schedule objectives set for the projects.
Some understanding of operations within critical environments would also be considered valuable.
The Requirements:
A Mechanical Design Engineer by profession, the candidate will be able to evidence the technical ability to support the delivery of concept and scheme designs whilst managing the document flow and successful delivery of detailed designs produced by our Consultant supply-chain.
The candidate will be encouraged to develop a broader delivery of the Design function across all technical disciplines (architectural, civil and structural engineering, MEP engineering, BMS etc.) for data centre developments and re-developments as their role develops in time. In particular they will be required to focus on data centre fit-out projects as well as supporting the broader business requirements.
Supporting the delivery of the Design function and other pre-construction activities, including: the definition of project scope, project budgets, design programme, design risk management, project quality management, including acquisitions support, the attainment of planning consent, building regulation approval and other relevant pre-construction building permits.
Support the delivery of design solutions that are innovative, highly focused on commission-ability and future facility operations, yet placing emphasis on delivering value-engineered solutions aligned with the broader business requirements.
Work intrinsically with the construction Delivery Manager by supporting the Design & Construction team, through-out the project life-cycle, evaluating changes in project scope, clarifying design queries and monitoring quality. On acceptance of commissioning, assist in formally confirming the design intent has been achieved, in-line with project processes.
Liaising with and support the overseeing of external Professional Consultants (Architects, Engineers) and Equipment Suppliers.
Responsible for updating and maintaining my clients Design & Engineering Guidelines / Standards under the guidance of the Design team to assure that standards are up to date with industry best practices and meet their business objectives (heavy emphasis on quality, availability and value-engineering).
Ensure that my clients Design & Engineering Guidelines/Standards are maintained on their Design & Construction Intranet and/or Project Management Web Site and adhered to throughout the development process.
Support the delivery of projects in accordance with Design & Construction project management processes including the Gating Process, having undertaken appropriate training. Support the management of other internal stakeholder expectations in a conflict encouraged environment, including: Portfolio Management, Acquisitions, Technical Operations, Sales Engineering and Sales.
Support the consistent application of their Design & Engineering Guidelines/Standards across the their portfolio of projects to maintain cost effective project master planning and turn key data centre development.
Support the Design team during the development of customised data centre development projects for Build-to-Suit customers. This will include detailed development of work letters including program (scope), budget (heavy emphasis on value-engineering) and schedule documents to support their leasing activities.
Assist in producing fortnightly project reporting to the leadership of Design & Construction to ensure that budget, schedule and scope objectives are being maintained and be responsible for communicating progress to both internal and external stakeholders.
Developing management skills, the ability to manage, internally and externally, multiple individuals, project teams and vendors seamlessly to meet my clients project objectives.
Assist in the preparation and review of budgets and forecasts related to anticipated design and construction expenditures. Assist in the review and production of detailed business case documents required to fulfill the Gating Process used to move projects from concept stage to completion.
Ability to work with and communicate effectively with many groups and disciplines across the company including executive management, operations, sales engineering, sales and finance. Provide timely and accurate responses to Sales enquiries.
In conjunction with the Design & Construction team, maintain existing vendor (equipment suppliers, architects, engineers, consultants, etc) relationships and develop new vendor relationships to ensure cost effective services for DLR projects and support relationships with Contractors.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities, but will support as part of a team of current and future DLR Design Managers, Professional Consultants and vendors in performance of duties on projects.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree (BSc (Hons)/BEng (Hons)) from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) or Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) accredited university supported by post-graduate qualification(s). The candidate is already likely to be operating at a Senior Engineer level within an engineering, construction or property environment and will have a demonstrable track record as part of a team for one to two years minimum, of delivering and contributing to successful technically-complex engineering-led projects as part of a team; including experience as a lead engineer on a projects with a total value of Euro 10 million.
Experience is likely to have come from the design and delivery of capital projects within mission critical environments or technical real estate which could include, data centres, telecommunications or the banking and finance sector, etc.
Certificates and/or Licences
Working towards becoming an associate member of the IMechE or IET or similar and in the future Chartered Engineer (Mechanical Engineering).
Communication Skills
Ability to comprehend, analyse, and interpret complex business documents.
Willingness to contribute to effective presentations and respond to questions from groups of peers, managers, clients and customers.

Requires basic knowledge of design and construction terms, principles and contracts.
Financial Knowledge
Requires the ability to contribute to the development, review and analysis of budgets and estimates.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to analyse and solve problems involving several options with limited information. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form and to work independently from clear direction given by the D&C team. Requires advanced analytical and quantitative skills.
Other Skills and/or Abilities
An excellent understanding of mechanical building services as well as some knowledge of standard practices in the design and construction industry.
Must be familiar with basic building code, permitting and planning legislation/requirements.
Ability to understand and interpret and produce design sketch drawings, support the production of project schedules and detailed budgets/estimate summaries.
Ability to prioritise work and manage time effectively. Ability to work well under pressure with a proactive approach to unusual occurrences. Requires excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and openness to new ideas and procedures.
Experienced in the use of MS Office software and AutoCAD (desired).
Fluency in a European language, French or German, would be beneficial but not essential.
Travel and Project Locations
This role requires the operation of the duties within all areas of the EMEA region. Frequent travel and stay-overs will be required within Europe, with the London office being the base for the role overall. Where multiple projects run in parallel, a significant proportion of time can be spent at the project sites, during the implementation phase. Some global travel maybe required
