Acorn is recruiting a R&D Design Engineer for a Global Tier 1 Manufacturer to the automotive industry.
Location - County Durham
Salary - competitive + excellent benefits
Working hours - 38
The Design Engineer will be expected to travel as required to support customer and Company objectives. 65 - 80% of time will be spent on CAD
Overview
Liaising with customers ensuring that design solutions provided fully support their requirements and develop engineering skills generating load-bearing structural components.
Key tasks / responsibilities
To process components from pre-concept to production which typically includes the following key tasks:
- Generate concept designs, identifying problems and solutions and delivering detailed designs.
- Ensure component designs are production feasible, using Design For Manufacture / Assembly.
- Support prototype build, product testing, product design timing plans and ongoing production needs.
- Liaise with customers' Engineers to achieve design requirements.
- Obtain and control package information from customers.
- Produce three dimensional solid models to support customer requirements.
- Produce two dimensional Engineering drawings for prototype / production use with capable dimensional tolerances/GDT.
- Work concurrently with R&D Design Analysis Engineers to develop appropriate structural solutions to meet performance requirements.
- Arrange and lead design / feasibility reviews and ensure all released designs have formal manufacturing feasibility approval.
- Support team reviews.
- Ensure departmental project compliance with TS16949.
- Identify and action personal training needs and development.
- Assist the R&D Technical Centre Manager and Senior Design Engineers, as appropriate, in the delivery of their responsibilities.
Required skill, qualifications and experience
- An understanding of pressing, tooling and welding processes, would be a benefit.
- A high understanding of CAD requirements and be highly skilled in Catia Ver5 or similar automotive CAD system.
- Understanding of drafting standards and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- The ability to generate design concepts that are fit for purpose, directionally correct and support the companies overall objectives and strategy.
- Ability to understand, interpret and act upon results from design analysis to optimise component designs.
- Have proven engineering design background (ideally in structural components).
- Have or be gaining experience of the automotive sector.
- Qualified to HND, or en route to, Graduate level in appropriate engineering discipline.
- Knowledge of Microsoft software such as Project, Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
